Emily Burns, M.Ed., CRC, serves as a Disability Counselor and Outreach Coordinator for Services with Students with Disabilities (SSD). She meets individually with students to discuss their disability, reviews disability documentation in order to determine supported academic accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, as Amended in 2008, and provides students with ongoing support regarding classroom concerns. In her role as Outreach Coordinator, she gives presentations to faculty, staff and students regarding the services provided by SSD. She also assists students with the application process for the Workforce Recruitment Program.
Emily holds a Bachelor and Master degree of Education from Kent State University, with majors in Deaf Education and Rehabilitation Counseling. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Emily worked as a Disability Specialist at Penn State University and has also served as an Accessibility Specialist at Kent State University. She is a member of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) and is nationally licensed as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor.
