Having worked in Disability Services in Higher Education since 2010, Debbie Mitchell assumed the role of Disability Counselor at Virginia Tech in September 2019. As a first-generation college graduate from rural North Carolina, Debbie has a passion to help students achieve their goals. Her background and interests have focused on creating an environment that is welcoming for all students. She works with students through an interactive process to determine appropriate academic accommodations because of disability-related barriers.
Debbie holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Arts in Higher Education from George Mason University. She previously served as a disability counselor at George Mason University and Jefferson College of Health Sciences.
Debbie is a member of AHEAD, the Association on Higher Education and Disability.
