Standardized Testing
Services for Students with Disabilities’ (SSD) mission includes assisting students with disabilities with transitioning to the next stage of their academic and professional careers. We can assist students with completing the requirements for requesting accommodations from testing agencies. We offer this assistance to current and former Virginia Tech students who are or were registered with SSD and used accommodations. SSD staff will need to consult with students individually to provide assistance (in person or by telephone) before SSD will sign forms or provide letters or other documents to a testing agency.
SSD can assist with many different types of exams, however there are some we are most familiar:
- The Graduate Record Exam (GRE), PRAXIS, or TOEFL through ETS
- The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
- The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) through AAMC
- The Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
- The North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NVALE)
Services for Students with Disabilities recommends that students review the information about test taking with accommodations very closely for the exam that they plan to take, as each process is very different. When preparing to meet with an SSD coordinator, please read the information prior to the consultation and bring any and all necessary documents. SSD coordinators will not sign a form without having viewed the entire accommodations packet a student will send to the testing agency. Please note that SSD does not make determinations of eligibility for testing accommodations for these tests. Each testing agency has different requirements and processes. Some students may find that they need to be re-evaluated for their disability, so please plan your visit with SSD accordingly.
